A house full of gold and jade, long life, wealth and honor

$89.90

This is a Chinese amulet coin used to gather wealth, status, health and life. It first appeared in the Yuan Dynasty and is generally used by officials or literati. It is a very special type among Chinese amulet coins – without patterns, only characters, but it represents the most straightforward and decisive beliefs and wishes. Therefore, similar genuine antiques are often more valuable than Chinese amulet coins with the same implied meaning. It can also form different series through the combination of different characters.

On the front are the words “A house full of gold and jade”, which means that the living room at home is filled with gold and jade, referring to the gathering of wealth and treasures at home. Interestingly, the Chinese character “tang” can be understood as a villa, a bedroom, or a living room, and it can also be understood as a studio or a living room. On the back are the words “long life, wealth and honor”, which means having a long and healthy life, as well as wealth and status. Although the words “wealth” and “nobility” are often used together, they represent different meanings. The former represents worldly wealth, similar to a successful merchant; the latter represents social status, similar to court nobles.

The second interesting point is that round coins with round holes first appeared in the State of Wei during the Warring States period. Then, they stopped being used as the form of circulating currency after the Qin Dynasty unified the six states. However, they have tenacious vitality among the people. Being round both inside and outside, they are convenient to carry, and they also reflect the philosophical thinking of “being consistent inside and outside”.
