A house full of gold and jade, long life, wealth and honor; Liu Hai playing with the golden toad

This is a Chinese amulet coin used to gather wealth, status, health and life. Its style first appeared in the Song Dynasty and forms a pair with another coin that has the words “A house full of gold and jade, long life, wealth and honor” on the front and the pattern of the crane and the deer in spring on the back. The characters on the front of the amulet are common auspicious words in China, symbolizing the rapid gathering of wealth, the long-term retention of wealth and the enhancement of one’s status. The characters on the front are combined with the pattern on the back to gather beliefs and improve fortune. It is particularly important to emphasize that the pattern on the back implies that we should master money instead of being slaves to it.

On the front of it are the words “A house full of gold and jade, long life, wealth and honor”. Surrounding the characters are the “Eight Auspicious Treasures”, which are the eight treasures used to worship the Buddha in Buddhism, representing eight different kinds of happiness and also representing eight different kinds of wisdom and abilities.

Liu Hai is an immortal in Taoism and is said to be a disciple of Lü Dongbin among the Eight Immortals. The golden toad, also known as the treasure-attracting golden toad, is a three-legged golden toad that can find various treasures. It is said that when the three-legged golden toad appeared in the world, Liu Hai lured and captured it with strings of copper coins. The golden toad holding a copper coin in its mouth represents the gathering of wealth; Liu Hai with bare feet and flowing hair symbolizes true freedom. As we said before, this pattern emphasizes that we should treat wealth with a playful attitude, but we should master money instead of being driven by it, otherwise we will lose our true freedom.
